With a career spanning several decades, Dietz has built a reputation for crafting engaging narratives that often explore themes of war, space exploration, and the human condition. He served in the United States Navy and later attended the University of Washington, where he earned a Bachelor of Arts degree in Communications. His experiences in the Navy and his academic background would later influence his writing, especially in the realm of military science fiction.

In the 1980s, Dietz began his career as a published author with works like The Final Battle (1984) and By Blood Alone (1985). He gained recognition for his Legion of the Damned series, which blends military science fiction with elements of space opera. The series follows the exploits of the Legion, a futuristic military force, in their battles against various adversaries across the galaxy. Legion of the Damned (1993), the first book in the series, marked a significant milestone in Dietz's career and established him as a notable name in the genre. Dietz's body of work includes a wide range of novels, from standalone titles to multiple series, showcasing his versatility as a writer. He has attended conventions, engaged with fans, and contributed to discussions on the craft of writing. As of my knowledge cutoff date in January 2022, William C. Dietz continues to write and contribute to the science fiction genre. His impact on the field, particularly within the realm of military science fiction, remains a testament to his storytelling prowess and dedication to the craft.

At Empire's Edge

In a far-distant future, the Uman Empire has spread to the stars and beyond, conquering and colonizing worlds, ruling with a benevolent-but iron-fist. The Pax Umana reigns, and all is well. But on one planet, the remnants of a violent, shape-shifting race called the Sagathis are confined, kept captive by xeno-cops, who have been bio-engineered to be able to see through their guises. Still, sometimes one manages to escape.
Zak Cato is a xeno-cop. He's returning a fugitive Sagathi when things go horribly wrong. Cato- the only survivor after the rest of his men are slaughtered-must now figure out who betrayed them and bring the alien in, whatever the cost.
