Twyla Tharp, born on July 1, 1941, in Portland, Indiana, is a pioneering American dancer and choreographer renowned for her groundbreaking work in the world of contemporary dance. From a young age, Tharp displayed a natural talent for movement, studying dance from childhood and eventually pursuing formal training at Barnard College in New York City.
