Cartoonist Jim Davis

Jim Davis, born on July 28, 1945, in Marion, Indiana, is an American cartoonist best known for creating the widely popular comic strip Garfield. Raised on a small farm, Davis developed a passion for drawing at an early age. After studying art and business at Ball State University, he began his career as a cartoonist.

In 1978, Jim Davis introduced the world to the lasagna-loving, lazy, and cynical orange cat named Garfield. The comic strip quickly gained immense popularity for its humor, relatable characters, and Davis's distinctive drawing style. Garfield's humorous observations about life, food, and Mondays resonated with a broad audience, making the comic strip a global phenomenon. Garfield has been translated into numerous languages, appearing in thousands of newspapers worldwide. The success of the strip led to various spin-off products, including books, animated television specials, merchandise, and an animated TV series. Jim Davis's contributions to the world of comics extend beyond Garfield. In collaboration with other artists, he created additional comic strips such as U.S. Acres (also known as Orson's Farm) and Mr. Potato Head.

Beyond his work in comics, Davis is known for his philanthropic efforts. He established the Professor Garfield Foundation, a non-profit organization that promotes children's literacy and provides educational resources through digital media. Jim Davis's impact on the comic strip industry is significant, and Garfield remains one of the most beloved and enduring comic strips in popular culture. Davis's ability to capture the humor in everyday life and create memorable characters has left an indelible mark on readers of all ages.

Experience twenty-five years of the furry phenomenon known as Garfield with this fun, in-depth, and lavishly illustrated book.

Jim Davis’s grandfather, James A. Garfield Davis, was a big, cantankerous, outspoken man. Garfield is a big, cantankerous, outspoken cat. Coincidence? Of course not. The cartoon affectionately modeled on his grandfather has propelled creator Jim Davis and Garfield into the realm of comic superstardom. In this book, you’ll get a unique look back at the humble beginnings and enormous success of America’s favorite feline.

In Dog Years I’d Be Dead takes a comprehensive look at everything Garfield the comics, the television shows, the zillions of products (who on the planet hasn’t seen the grinning plush doll suction-cupped to a car window?), and, of course, the fans. You’ll get the inside scoop about the pioneering comic-strip books that set the standard for the industry with a shape now called the “Garfield format.” You’ll venture into the studio where the voice talent recorded TV shows, and hear about the antics of special guest stars like Jonathan Winters and Buddy Hackett. Loaded with never-before-seen archival gems from Jim Davis’s personal collection and tribute cartoons from legends like Beetle Bailey ’s Mort Walker, Blondie ’s Dean Young, and The Family Circus ’s Bil Keane, this is a book to treasure.

30 Years of Laughs & Lasagna: The Life & Times of a Fat, Furry Legend!

Celebrate the big 30 with the lasagna-loving legend!

“If Garfield ever lost weight, I’d lose my job security.”
– Jim Davis

When the world’ s most famous feline hits the three-decade milestone it’s time to celebrate! 30 Years of Laughs & Lasagna is a tribute to this tremendous achievement. Organized by decade, each with an introduction by Jim Davis, this lavishly illustrated volume features more than four hundred strips, including thirty of Jim Davis’s all-time favorites with informative remarks from Jim on why they made the grade. Packed with early sketches, enlightening quotes, and fun facts (did you know that the Garfield comic was originally titled Jon?), this book shows how Garfield evolved from a witty kitty to a world-renowned fat cat.

Of Jim Davis’s “little hobby,” Blondie cartoonist Dean Young “Every one of these little treasures is an exquisite menagerie of comic timing, writing, and cartoon art. It’s easy to see why his strip is continually voted one of the best on our planet by readers everywhere.”

So if you appreciate the unparalleled splendors of layered pasta, need something to ward off those nap attacks, or have a healthy appetite for humor, 30 Years of Laughs & Lasagna is just the ticket. Perhaps Jim Davis puts it “This whole line of work is to make people happy and smile.” Garfield’s millions of fans couldn’t agree more.
