Jancis Robinson, born on April 22, 1950, in Cumbria, England, is a renowned British wine critic, journalist, and author. Widely regarded as one of the world's leading authorities on wine, Robinson has made significant contributions to the appreciation and understanding of wine through her writing, television appearances, and educational efforts. Robinson's fascination with wine began during her time at the University of Oxford, where she studied mathematics and philosophy. It was there that she discovered her passion for wine and decided to pursue a career in the wine industry. After completing her studies, Robinson embarked on a journey to become a Master of Wine, a prestigious qualification that requires rigorous study, tasting, and examination. In 1984, she became the first person outside the wine trade to achieve the title of Master of Wine, marking the beginning of her illustrious career in wine. Robinson's expertise and discerning palate quickly earned her recognition within the wine community, and she began writing for various publications, including The Financial Times and Decanter magazine. In 1985, she published her first book, Vines, Grapes & Wines: The Wine Drinker's Guide to Grape Varieties, which became a seminal work in the field of wine education.

Throughout her career, Robinson has authored several other books on wine, including the highly acclaimed The Oxford Companion to Wine, which she co-edited with wine writer Hugh Johnson. Considered the definitive reference work on wine, the book has been praised for its comprehensive coverage of wine-related topics and its accessible writing style. In addition to her writing, Robinson is known for her television appearances, including the BBC series Jancis Robinson's Wine Course and Jancis Robinson's Wine School, which have introduced millions of viewers to the world of wine.

Robinson's influence extends beyond the world of wine criticism; she is also a vocal advocate for sustainability and environmental stewardship in the wine industry. She has been a champion of organic and biodynamic farming practices and has used her platform to raise awareness about the importance of preserving the planet's natural resources. Throughout her career, Robinson has received numerous awards and honors for her contributions to the wine industry, including an Officer of the Order of the British Empire (OBE) for services to wine in 2003. She continues to be an influential voice in the world of wine, inspiring countless enthusiasts and professionals alike with her passion, knowledge, and dedication to excellence.
