Cokie Roberts biography

Cokie Roberts, born Mary Martha Corinne Morrison Claiborne Boggs on December 27, 1943, in New Orleans, Louisiana, was a prominent American journalist and political commentator. She was born into a family deeply entrenched in politics and public service; her father, Hale Boggs, served as a member of the U.S. House of Representatives, and her mother, Lindy Boggs, also served as a member of Congress, later becoming the U.S. Ambassador to the Vatican. Roberts graduated from Wellesley College in 1964 with a degree in political science, and she began her career in journalism shortly thereafter. She worked for several local newspapers and radio stations before joining CBS News in 1974 as a congressional correspondent. During her time at CBS, Roberts gained recognition for her insightful reporting and analysis of political events, earning her multiple Emmy Awards.

In 1988, Roberts joined ABC News as a co-anchor of the Sunday morning program This Week with David Brinkley, alongside Sam Donaldson and George Will. Her tenure on the show solidified her reputation as one of the most respected political commentators in the industry, known for her sharp intellect, balanced perspective, and ability to distill complex issues for a broad audience. Throughout her career, Roberts covered a wide range of political events, including presidential elections, congressional hearings, and international summits. She was known for her commitment to journalistic integrity and her dedication to informing the public about the inner workings of government.

In addition to her work in television journalism, Roberts was also a prolific author, penning several best-selling books on American history and politics. Her books, which include titles such as Founding Mothers: The Women Who Raised Our Nation and Capital Dames: The Civil War and the Women of Washington, 1848–1868, shed light on the often-overlooked contributions of women to the shaping of the United States. Throughout her career, Roberts was a trailblazer for women in journalism, breaking down barriers and paving the way for future generations of female reporters and commentators. She was a staunch advocate for diversity and inclusion in the media industry, and she used her platform to amplify the voices of underrepresented communities.

Cokie Roberts passed away on September 17, 2019, at the age of 75, following complications from breast cancer. Her legacy lives on through her groundbreaking work in journalism, her insightful commentary on American politics, and her unwavering commitment to the principles of truth, fairness, and accuracy in reporting.
