Author Andy Weir

Weir was born and raised in California, the only child of an accelerator physicist father and an electrical-engineer mother who divorced when he was eight. Weir grew up reading classic science fiction such as the works of Arthur C. Clarke and Isaac Asimov. At the age of 15, he began working as a computer programmer for Sandia National Laboratories. He studied computer science at UC San Diego, although he did not graduate. He worked as a programmer for several software companies, including AOL, Palm, MobileIron and Blizzard, where he worked on the video game Warcraft II: Tides of Darkness.

In 2011, Weir began serializing The Martian on his website, drawing upon his extensive knowledge of science and engineering to create a realistic and engaging narrative. The story follows astronaut Mark Watney, who is stranded on Mars after a mission goes awry, and his desperate struggle to survive against all odds. The Martian gained a devoted following online, attracting the attention of literary agents and publishers. In 2014, Weir self-published the novel on Amazon Kindle, where it quickly became a bestseller. The following year, The Martian was re-released by Crown Publishing Group and went on to achieve even greater success, garnering critical acclaim and winning the prestigious John W. Campbell Award for Best New Writer. The success of The Martian propelled Weir to international fame, earning him a dedicated fan base and paving the way for further literary endeavors. In 2017, his second novel, Artemis, was published, which is set on the Moon and follows the adventures of a young smuggler named Jazz Bashara. Weir's writing is characterized by its meticulous attention to scientific detail, fast-paced storytelling, and dry humor. He has a knack for making complex scientific concepts accessible to readers without sacrificing narrative momentum, earning praise from both critics and audiences alike.
