Albert Ellis Hotchner, commonly known as A. E. Hotchner, was born on June 28, 1920, in St. Louis, Missouri, and became a versatile American author, editor, playwright, and biographer. Hotchner attended Washington University in St. Louis, where he developed a passion for writing. His literary journey took a significant turn when he met and befriended the iconic American author Ernest Hemingway in 1948. This friendship became the foundation for several collaborative projects, including co-authoring the memoir Papa Hemingway (1966), which provided a personal and intimate look into Hemingway's life.

In addition to his association with Hemingway, Hotchner penned numerous novels, plays, and works of non-fiction. His novels often explored themes of friendship, love, and the human experience. Notable among his works is The Man Who Lived at the Ritz (1981), a historical novel set against the backdrop of Nazi-occupied Paris during World War II. Hotchner's versatility extended to his role as a playwright.
