Author Orson Scott Card

Orson Scott Card (born August 24, 1951) is an American author, critic, public speaker, and essayist best known for his contributions to science fiction and fantasy literature. Born in Richland, Washington, Card spent his early years in various locations, including California, Arizona, and Utah, as his father's job with the Department of Agriculture required frequent moves. Card's love for storytelling and writing emerged early in his life. He studied theater at Brigham Young University but left before completing his degree to pursue writing. In the early 1970s, he served a mission for The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in Brazil, an experience that would later influence some of his works.

His breakout novel, Ender's Game, was first published as a short story in Analog Science Fiction and Fact magazine in 1977 and later expanded into a novel in 1985. The novel follows the story of a young boy, Ender Wiggin, who is recruited into a military training program to prepare for an impending alien invasion. Ender's Game became a classic in science fiction literature and won both the Hugo and Nebula Awards. Orson Scott Card continued the Ender series with several sequels, including Speaker for the Dead, Xenocide, and Children of the Mind. The Ender series explores complex themes such as morality, empathy, and the consequences of war. Beyond the Ender universe, Card has written numerous other novels, short stories, and series, showcasing his versatility within the speculative fiction genre.

In addition to his fiction writing, Card has been involved in various writing-related activities. He has taught writing workshops and served as a critic and reviewer. His essays on various topics, including literature, politics, and culture, have been published in magazines and anthologies. Card's personal beliefs and opinions, particularly on social and political issues, have sometimes sparked controversy. Despite this, he has remained a prominent figure in the science fiction community and has received several prestigious awards for his contributions to the genre. Orson Scott Card's influence extends beyond literature, as his works have been adapted into various forms of media, including film, television, and video games. Despite the occasional controversies surrounding his views, Card's impact on the world of speculative fiction remains significant, and his body of work continues to be widely read and studied.

Ender's Game - Ender's Saga Book 1

Andrew "Ender" Wiggin thinks he is playing computer simulated war games; he is, in fact, engaged in something far more desperate. The result of genetic experimentation, Ender may be the military genius Earth desperately needs in a war against an alien enemy seeking to destroy all human life. The only way to find out is to throw Ender into ever harsher training, to chip away and find the diamond inside, or destroy him utterly. Ender Wiggin is six years old when it begins. He will grow up fast.

But Ender is not the only result of the experiment. The war with the Buggers has been raging for a hundred years, and the quest for the perfect general has been underway almost as long. Ender's two older siblings, Peter and Valentine, are every bit as unusual as he is, but in very different ways. While Peter was too uncontrollably violent, Valentine very nearly lacks the capability for violence altogether. Neither was found suitable for the military's purpose. But they are driven by their jealousy of Ender, and by their inbred drive for power. Peter seeks to control the political process, to become a ruler. Valentine's abilities turn more toward the subtle control of the beliefs of commoner and elite alike, through powerfully convincing essays. Hiding their youth and identities behind the anonymity of the computer networks, these two begin working together to shape the destiny of Earth-an Earth that has no future at all if their brother Ender fails.

Speaker For the Dead - Ender's Saga Book 2

Hugo and Nebula Award-winning classic. In this second book in the saga set 3,000 years after the terrible war, Ender Wiggin is reviled by history as the Xenocide the destroyer of the alien Buggers. Now, Ender tells the true story of the war and seeks to stop history from repeating itself. ...

In the aftermath of his terrible war, Ender Wiggin disappeared, and a powerful voice arose: The Speaker for the Dead, who told the true story of the Bugger War.

Now, long years later, a second alien race has been discovered, but again the aliens' ways are strange and frightening...again, humans die. And it is only the Speaker for the Dead, who is also Ender Wiggin the Xenocide, who has the courage to confront the mystery...and the truth.

Speaker for the Dead, the second novel in Orson Scott Card's Ender Quintet, is the winner of the 1986 Nebula Award for Best Novel and the 1987 Hugo Award for Best Novel.

Xenocide - Ender's Saga Book 3

The war for survival of the planet Lusitania will be fought in the heart of a child named Gloriously Bright.

On Lusitania, Ender found a world where humans and pequininos and the Hive Queen could all live together; where three very different intelligent species could find common ground at last. Or so he thought.

Lusitania also harbors the descolada, a virus that kills all humans it infects, but which the pequininos require in order to become adults. The Starways Congress so fears the effects of the descolada, should it escape from Lusitania, that they have ordered the destruction of the entire planet, and all who live there. The Fleet is on its way, a second xenocide seems inevitable.

Xenocide is the third novel in Orson Scott Card's The Ender Saga.

Children of the Mind - Ender's Saga Book 4

Children of the Mind (1996) is the fourth novel of Orson Scott Card's popular Ender's Game series of science fiction novels that focus on the character Ender Wiggin. This book was originally the second half of Xenocide, before it was split into two novels.

At the start of Children of the Mind, Jane, the evolved computer intelligence, is using her newly discovered abilities to take the races of buggers, humans and pequeninos outside the universe and back instantaneously. She uses these powers to move them to distant habitable planets for colonization. She is losing her memory and concentration as the vast computer network connected to the ansible is being shut down. If she is to survive, she must find a way to transfer her aiúa (or soul) to a human body.

Ender's Shadow - The Shadow Series Book 1

Welcome to Battleschool.

Growing up is never easy. But try living on the mean streets as a child begging for food and fighting like a dog with ruthless gangs of starving kids who wouldn't hesitate to pound your skull into pulp for a scrap of apple. If Bean has learned anything on the streets, it's how to survive. And not with fists. He is way too small for that. But with brains.

Bean is a genius with a magician's ability to zero in on his enemy and exploit his weakness.

What better quality for a future general to lead the Earth in a final climactic battle against a hostile alien race, known as Buggers. At Battleschool Bean meets and befriends another future commander Ender Wiggins and perhaps his only true rival.

Only one problem: for Bean and Ender, the future is now.

Ender's Shadow is the book that launched The Shadow Series, and the parallel novel to Orson Scott Card's science fiction classic, Ender's Game.
