Attorney Alan Dershowitz

Alan Dershowitz, born on September 1, 1938, is an American lawyer, jurist, and legal scholar known for his prolific career in the field of law and his high-profile involvement in some of the most significant legal cases of his time. Born in Brooklyn, New York, Dershowitz displayed an early aptitude for academia, graduating from Brooklyn College and later attending Yale Law School, where he earned his law degree. Dershowitz rose to prominence as a legal scholar with a keen interest in civil liberties, criminal law, and constitutional law. He joined the faculty at Harvard Law School in 1964 and quickly gained a reputation as an energetic and provocative teacher. Throughout his career, he has been a prolific author, penning numerous articles and books on legal topics, often challenging conventional legal wisdom. One of Dershowitz's notable achievements was his involvement in the defense of clients in high-profile cases. He gained widespread recognition for his role in the defense of Claus von Bülow in the 1980s. Von Bülow was accused of attempting to murder his wife, and Dershowitz's legal acumen played a crucial role in the successful appeal of the conviction.

Over the years, Dershowitz has been involved in various legal controversies and has defended clients facing intense public scrutiny. His approach to the law, which often prioritizes civil liberties and constitutional rights, has earned him both admiration and criticism. Notably, he was part of the defense team during the impeachment trial of President Donald Trump in 2020, arguing against the charges. In addition to his legal career, Dershowitz has been a vocal commentator on legal issues in the media, appearing on television and writing op-eds for major publications. His views and opinions have sometimes been polarizing, with critics challenging his stances on certain legal matters. Alan Dershowitz's impact extends beyond the courtroom and lecture hall. He has been an influential figure in shaping legal discourse in the United States, and his legacy is marked by his commitment to defending civil liberties and advocating for justice, even in the face of controversy.

Taking the Stand - My Life in the Law

America's most prominent legal mind and the #1 bestselling author of Chutzpah and The Best Defense , Alan Dershowitz, recounts his legal autobiography, describing how he came to the law, as well as the cases that have changed American jurisprudence over the past 50 years, most of which he has personally been involved in.

In Taking the Stand , Dershowitz reveals the evolution of his own thinking on such fundamental issues as censorship and the First Amendment, Civil Rights, Abortion, homicide and the increasing role that science plays in a legal defense. Alan Dershowitz, the Felix Frankfurter Professor of Law at Harvard University, and the author of such acclaimed bestsellers as Chutzpah , The Best Defense , and Reversal of Fortune , for the first time recounts his legal biography, describing his struggles academically at Yeshiva High School growning up in Williamsburg, Brooklyn, his successes at Yale, clerking for Supreme Court Justice Arthur Goldberg, his appointment to full professor at the Harvard at age 28, the youngest in the school's history. Dershowitz went on to work on many of the most celebrated cases in the land, from appealing (successfully) Claus Von Bulow's conviction for the murder of his wife Sunny, to the O.J. Simpson trial, to defending Mike Tyson, Leona Helmsley, Patty Hearst, and countless others.  He is currently part of the legal team advising Julian Assange.
