Chancellor took over as the sole anchor of the NBC Nightly News in 1970, succeeding David Brinkley. He steered the program with a calm and authoritative voice, guiding viewers through some of the most significant events of the time, including the Vietnam War, the Watergate scandal, and the Iranian Revolution.

Known for his distinctive voice and thoughtful commentary, Chancellor earned several accolades throughout his career, including Emmy Awards for his outstanding contributions to journalism. He retired from the "NBC Nightly News" in 1982 but continued to contribute to NBC News as a commentator and analyst. John Chancellor's impact on broadcast journalism extended beyond his on-screen presence.
