David Drake is an accomplished American science fiction and fantasy author, born on September 24, 1945, in Dubuque, Iowa. Widely recognized for his prolific contributions to the speculative fiction genre, Drake has left an indelible mark on the literary world with his unique blend of military science fiction, historical fantasy, and space opera. Raised in Iowa, Drake's early fascination with history and military subjects paved the way for his future literary endeavors. After completing his Bachelor of Arts in History from the University of Iowa in 1967, he served as an enlisted soldier in the U.S. Army during the Vietnam War. His military experiences profoundly influenced his writing, providing him with firsthand knowledge that would later be reflected in the gritty realism of his works.

Drake's writing career took off in the early 1970s with the publication of his first stories in the military-themed magazine Analog Science Fiction and Fact. His breakthrough came with the release of his novel Hammer's Slammers in 1979, a collection of interconnected stories that introduced readers to his signature blend of military and science fiction. The series would go on to become a hallmark of the genre. One of Drake's most notable collaborations is with author Eric Flint on the Belisarius series, an alternate history saga set during the Byzantine Empire. This collaboration showcased Drake's ability to seamlessly weave historical elements with speculative fiction, creating a rich and engaging narrative. In addition to his contributions to military science fiction, Drake has also explored other sub-genres, including fantasy. His "Lord of the Isles" series, beginning with the novel of the same name in 1997, delves into epic fantasy with a focus on magic and intricate world-building.

His writing style is known for its attention to detail, authenticity in military matters, and the exploration of complex characters within imaginative settings.
