Bob Dole biography

Bob Dole, whose full name is Robert Joseph Dole, was an American statesman, veteran, and politician who played a significant role in U.S. politics during the latter half of the 20th century. Born on July 22, 1923, in Russell, Kansas, Dole grew up in a working-class family during the Great Depression. His early experiences instilled in him a strong work ethic and a sense of duty. Dole's political career began after he served in the United States Army during World War II. In 1948, while still recovering from injuries sustained in combat that left his right arm permanently disabled, Dole successfully ran for a seat in the Kansas State Legislature. This marked the beginning of a long and distinguished political journey. He later moved on to national politics, serving in the U.S. House of Representatives from 1961 to 1969 before being elected to the U.S. Senate, where he served from 1969 to 1996. Dole became known for his pragmatic approach and bipartisan efforts, working on a range of issues, including agriculture, taxation, and disability rights.

Bob Dole sought the Republican nomination for the presidency in 1980 and 1988 but was unsuccessful in both attempts. In 1996, he secured the Republican nomination for the presidency and selected Jack Kemp as his running mate. Although he faced challenges against the popular incumbent, President Bill Clinton, Dole ran a spirited campaign. Ultimately, he did not win the presidency, but his dedication to public service and his contributions to American politics were widely acknowledged.

Throughout his career, Dole was recognized for his commitment to bipartisanship and his work on behalf of veterans. After leaving the Senate, he remained active in public life, serving as a respected elder statesman and a lobbyist. In addition to his political career, Bob Dole was known for his wit and humor, which he often used to connect with the public. His involvement in various charitable activities, including work with the World War II Memorial in Washington, D.C., reflected his ongoing commitment to service. Bob Dole passed away on December 5, 2021, at the age of 98. His legacy is remembered not only for his political accomplishments but also for his resilience, dedication to public service, and the impact he had on American politics during a dynamic period in history.

Great Political Wit - Laughing (Almost) All the Way to the White House

Bob Dole's political career may not have taken him to the White House, but he did pick up some great stories along the way. In this delightful collection, the longtime United States senator shares his favorite anecdotes, witticisms, and reminiscences.
From the campaign trail to the Oval Office, from smoke-filled rooms to the chambers of the Capitol, Bob Dole surveys a century of political wit.  There are bon mots from Calvin Coolidge, Winston Churchill, Harry Truman, John F. Kennedy, and a host of other political figures. Bob Dole introduces each section with mirthful moments from his own experience, displaying the gift for wry humor that has made him a favorite guest on late-night talk shows.
A jovial and completely bipartisan compendium, Great Political Wit is a connoisseur's selection of political repartee at its best.

Great Presidential Wit (...I Wish I Was in the Book)

Famous for his deadpan humor, New York Times bestselling author Senator Bob Dole here brings us his favorite witticisms and hilarious remarks of this country's commanders in chief. Great Presidential Wit collects the former senator's favorite funny stories and remarks by and about American presidents from George Washington to George W. Bush. Senator Dole tackles the assignment of ranking the presidents from the funniest (Abraham Lincoln) to the least funny (Millard Fillmore), and everyone in between. With chapters cleverly organized according to the senator's own opinions from "A Class by Themselves" (Lincoln, Reagan, the Roosevelts) and "Yankee Wits" (Coolidge, Kennedy) to "The Joke's on Them" (Taylor, Harding, Van Buren, Buchanan, the Harrisons, Pierce, Fillmore) Great Presidential Wit is the perfect antidote to the long political season and a patriotic reminder that our leaders are human and often witty and amusing.

One Soldier's Story

Before he became one of America's most respected statesmen, Bob Dole was an average citizen serving heroically for his country. The bravery he showed after suffering near-fatal injuries in the final days of World War II is the stuff of legend. Now, for the first time in his own words, Dole tells the moving story of his harrowing experience on and off the battlefield, and how it changed his life.

Speaking here not as a politician but as a wounded G. I., Dole recounts his own odyssey of courage and sacrifice, and also honors the fighting spirit of the countless heroes with whom he served. Heartfelt and inspiring, One Soldier's Story is the World War II chronicle that America has been waiting for.
